UFC Recap: A tactical night for the contenders

It was a long, studious night at the UFC. Between Sterling's Main Event and some prelim surprises, here is what you need to know.

UFC Recap: A tactical night for the contenders

A night of tactical management and control

Waking up with a strong coffee and a hint of frustration? That’s normal. Last night’s UFC Fight Night felt like a giant chess match where caution often took precedence over pure brawling. While fans of brutal finishes might have been left wanting more, the technicians definitely had plenty to dissect.

Between a strategic Main Event and a flurry of judges' decisions, the night served primarily to reshuffle the deck in several divisions. We've sorted through this 13-fight marathon to save you from wasting time on forgettable replays.

🥊 The Main Event: Aljamain Sterling vs Youssef Zalal

Aljamain « Funk Master » Sterling continues his transition into the Featherweight division. Facing a Youssef Zalal who never backed down, the former champion delivered a masterclass in control, alternating between clinical ground pressure and surgical distance management over five rounds. Sterling takes the win by unanimous decision in a tactical bout where his wrestling superiority made the difference.

Zalal showed great tenacity, but lacked that spark needed to upset a Sterling who is now well-settled at 145 pounds. With this win, the « Funk Master » confirms his ambition: he’s not here to make up the numbers, but to shake up the top 5 of his new weight class. A solid, no-nonsense performance that cements his legitimacy.

🏆 The Tops: Those who earned their performance bonus

  • Ryan Spann: The giant brought the heat. By ending his fight against Marcus Buchecha via R2 KO/TKO (2:10), he proves he has the firepower to disrupt the heavyweight hierarchy.
  • Jackson McVey: The breakout star of the night. He gave us the most electric moment with a R1 submission (2:14) against Sedriques Dumas, proving he has a rare killer instinct on this card.
  • Raoni Barcelos: A lesson in experience. Facing a very dangerous Montel Jackson, he kept his cool and stuck to his game plan to secure a masterful decision win (R3 5:00).

📉 The Flops and Disappointments: Those who should have stayed in bed

  • Eric McConico vs Rodolfo Vieira: A duel that got bogged down in frustrating passivity. Despite the stakes, the fight lacked intensity, ending in a decision (R3 5:00) for Eric McConico that left the crowd feeling flat.
  • Max Griffin vs Victor Valenzuela: We were expecting fireworks, but got a lackluster exchange. Both men seemed to search for a solution without ever taking the risks needed for a finish, resulting in an uneven performance capped by a decision (R3 5:00) for Victor Valenzuela.

🎁 The Pleasant Surprise: An unexpected ray of sunshine

  • Michelle Montague: She shows up, she wins, she leaves. By beating Mayra Bueno Silva via decision (R3 5:00), she made a huge statement against a seasoned opponent. Montague remains undefeated and is already shaping up to be a serious threat to the top 10.

Ultimately, a night to file under "intellectual" rather than "brutal." We’ll mostly remember Sterling’s rise and the emergence of new talents just waiting to be tested against the elite.
